Explaining HBO’s The Idol

In June 2023, HBO released “The Idol” onto an unsuspecting world. The series was dogged with criticism, and the world’s press treated it like witchcraft in the 16th century. However, what is clear from reading all of these articles, especially some of those that absolutely loathed the series, is that its authors clearly just never got it. I even read an article that claimed to explain the show but actually missed out on important details and didn’t actually explain anything other than a small part. I do question if many of these authors have ever experienced a good sexual experience or if they have had enough going on in their lives to truly get it.

WARNING — What follows are spoilers that explain crucial parts of the show, hopefully some of which, having watched, you truly understood, while some might come as somewhat of a curveball. The true resolution for me in writing this article is why you can never truly trust a review because it’s just someone else’s opinion.

In a nutshell, here is the explanation of “The Idol”: “The Idol” is a show about sexual domination in which the perceived victim is actually the perpetrator.

The story of “The Idol” is simplistic: A semi-has-been but still very young singer called Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is taken under the wing of a potential chancer agent called Tedros (The Weeknd), who sexually dominates her, strips…
